RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

WoW! I posted this on June 13th of this year. Talk about digging in the archives! LOL!!!
I wondered where it came from. It was in the posting from Old & Slow on 11-10-09. I made the mistake of "assuming" it was very recent.
Guess Floyd has a good reason to use the screen name "Old & Slow" :)
It's often a subject of interest. How this thread goes back over the course of the past years and how much value is placed in the 'archives' so, we do try to use it to the best advantage possible. Sometimes to advance a point. Old and SLOW but still get there. Oh, we do love our Prof', still swift.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

I gotta agree on running propane in a genset that is not designed for that fuel. I know several RV and aircraft guys who have done conversions and the exhaust really stings to high heaven. Almost a rotten egg smell Must be the corbon monoxide or other pollutants that are not good for your health. Far from the exhause generated from a properly made propane engine such as on a forklift.
Concerning the useable wattage of the 3500 watt sets that are out there now, I gotta agree that the best you will get is 2400 to 2800 useable watts of power. Remember that 2400 watts is a solid 20
amp circuit at 120 volts. Usually enough to run the A/C in a coach or trailer along with running a few other items to make you comfortable.
Right now my genset is sitting in a hanger because I purchased an old Cessna 172. No power in the hanger. It's enough to run a few lights and power tools while I work on the aircraft. That little 100 pounder with the Honda knock-off sure comes in handy! The aircraft flies very well and is certified for flight. I'm just working on the cosmetics as in buffing out the paint and cleaning up the interior. Not much I can do not being a certified aircraft mechanic. But I can get her looking as good as she flies. :)
Don't worry, I still own the Jayco 2300 and love it! Still running great after 30 years but she is getting really long in the tooth on the interior. Lots of great family time inside that coach!
Long time since I have been here! Still looks the same.
I have my Champion converted to burn Propane or Gas. The exhaust smell seems okay with burning propane. But is it a dangerious conversion?

RE: Generator ground rod

I am aware this discourse is between men of learning. You have to know us folks in the novice class read this thread with interest, BUT only to find the truth if our Gensets are safe for use with our RV's. I have a Champion C46540 120/240v with a switch for 120v use only. The TT30R has a floating neutral. The G/Y third connector in the RV recp't runs to the RV cord and to the RV. Then is this setup considered a 120v two wire system and forget that the genset can produce 240v? And no GFI needed?

RE: Generator ground rod

So he most certainly DOES know what he's talking about. You will often see this in isolated areas, just a single hot wire along the top of the poles, and that's it.
Here is one article documenting it. It is call SWER (Single Wire Earth Return).
(Hmm, why did that laughter suddenly stop? :h)
Did you read the article? The system failed to work in the mid 1800s
Does it exist today? Not a chance.
The novice must jump in here. I lived for a number to years in third world countries with two wire 240vac systems ( two hots). Not safe but used. If you wanted 120v. you just used one wire and a really good ground, like a rod in the ground or if a water system was is place, attach ground wire to pipe. I know we are talking USA and Canada here.

RE: Magna 3000 Watt Portable Inverter Generator

I have been keeping my eye on one of the Magna 3000's with electric and remote start. There are a lot of these sold on ebay and they seem to have good comments about them. I know Wasatch Rendezvous sells these and stocks the parts for them. If the price point drops a little more I think I will be in for one.
Have you bought this unit? Anything to add? Someone know where the name "MAGNA" came from for this brand?

RE: Generator Question

To be really fair, the difference in 7 feet and 7 meters is considerable. When I checked my Onan at 5/7 feet the meter read 75 dBA. This is pretty loud if you are a close neighbor. Yes, I own a Chanpion and know the little fellow quite well. I built 12 different boxes to test different ideas to add some silence. If the issue were not 'serious' the subject would not be number one with most generator threads. So the question will remain, what to buy, red, blue, yellow or some other color. Yes, the sky is blue and most owners of that color are saying the 3000i is the one to buy. And I wish the Honda 650 was still on the market.

RE: Generator Question

Better keep it quiet the noise police might hear you!!!!!:B The point here is you got what you can afford. I got a Briggs & Stratton 4000/watt. Its big and loud, but its all I can afford! If that bothers anyone, TO BAD!!!!
That's not really nice Brother camper. I always though campers were kind friendly people, I guess not all as in every thing else.
It seems all generator threads get into the noise factor. Not sure, maybe some of the issue has to do with the generation gap. Us old timers remember when campin' was campin'. Quiet and peace. Friendly folks, all. Where the 'noise police' sayin' came from, not sure. But I don't think it should be so often used. I guess peace and quiet comes at a price. BUT, my OEM is not silent. For a price me thinks the NEW rigs should have two gens. One biggie and a smaller more quiet one to top up the batts?

RE: Generator Question

Lot's of NEW Champions along with other New brands, all close to the same in quality. Common parts even with the original Honda. A brand like DuroPower now has lowered the dbA to 63, with side and end panels on their new DP3500EC (Electric Start) and @349 with free shipping is a nice deal. I owned one with great success. Also, my Champion C46540 has Electric Start added and after over two years in service, it has been a winner. Used now for the stick house back up.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Hmmm,
New Champions all over the place. I live not far from pplmotorhomes.com in Houston. At one time they sold the Champion 40008 NOW they sell the new UltraGen by CHAMPION (Blue)that is Electric Start (looks just like the 40008) @ $630.90 plus shipping. Makes the 3500w Electric Start DP3500EC by DuroPower @ 349 and Free Shipping with side and end panels (63 bBA) almost 1/2 price or two-fer one.

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Sears has a CHAMPION 3500 WATT model #46511 on their internet site with free shipping for $299, but I don't recognise this model number. The picture isn't clear enough to determine if it has an RV outlet.
Is anyone familiar with this unit?
Home Depot is running the same deal. These are new, old stock Champion generators.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100663865&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=100663865&cm_mmc=shopping-_-google-_-D25X-_-100663865
Looks like we are seeing new numbers for Champion here and there. Are they new stock or old? Amazon.com has one that looks like the face of a 40008 but has numbers like Champion 46517 and 534 All look pretty close to the same? Some can not be sold in CA.? And looks like Sears is going into the Generator business! I think I counted 117 online. We should see lot's of new reports and reviews posted on 3000w Chinese Genset(s) Info.

RE: Battery Question

I added distilled water to a spilled battery and that was the wrong thing to do.
bill h above has the correct answer.
I ended up having to replace what was a perfectly good battery after diluting the electrolyte.
Someone might tell us 'is it okay to empty the batteries and start all over with new electrolyte?' Would this be a possible solution? A chem to refresh the plates? Lot's to be learned about batteries.

Looks like DuroPower has hit the road running with their (new) DP3500ES Electric Start @ $349 w/free shipping ~ Plus it comes with wheels and some other stuff . Same model I owned before but now has side panels and is listed @ 63 dbA ~ A great upgrade and at a very low price.

RE: Grounding Generators

Well folks,
The novice says " God save the Queen and a RV'er using a portable genset without a GFCI between the gen and the RV." I still questioned the use of my Onan 120v until I read Prof's last post. Maybe?:D

RE: Quietest roof a/cs

A half a mill or more will do the trick. The big boys running those big rigs with the basement A/C have the answer. But, for us other folks who need 11,500/13,500 btu roof top units, we'll have to hear the noise. For me, I'm working on the idea of adding a 6,000 btu window type unit, in the back bed room. Not hanging out a window. So maybe we can sleep in peace.
Maybe someone will give us the story, which one of the roof type units are the most quiet.

RE: generator question.

Simply, anytime you have more parts that can fail, it increases the chance of failure. You have electronics operating in a harsh environment of vibrations, heat and sometimes moisture.I agree with this on an "all things being equal" basis, but not all things are equal. The only way to validate this statement is with actual field data. There have been a few reports of electronics failures in Honda eu-series generators, and I've seen none for Yamaha or Robin-Subaru inverter models. There have been a lot more reports of failures in Onan built-in AVR generators, but that doesn't prove a thing either. The Honda electronics are 100% contained in a single, potted module. Using a microprocessor, there's a possibility it has a pretty low parts count. Are the brushes on an AVR generator really more reliable than the electronics on an inverter generator? How about the engines and the starters that the electronics are mated to? Not meaning to step on any toes, based on posts here it appears that the low cost inverter generators are noticeably less reliable than the red, blue, and yellow (Robin Subaru) high-priced units. The broad-brush statement doesn't fly. I'll believe statistically significant data, or controlled conditions test results.
"There have been a lot more reports of failures in Onan built-in AVR generators"
Yes, almost every day we see new reports of Onan and less expensive inverters with failures. I have been RV'ing all my life. Just tried to count the Onan's I've owned and believe the number is six. I can't remember of one that did not need service. And the expense of repairs was high. I own a MH with a Onan and it to needs to go to the shop. Two AVR failures. And one poster mentioned 'moister'. Big fault of built-ins IMHO. Road dirt and water all over the gen and into the genset genhead. Now someone will say, yes but, there are more Onan's than all others put together. IMHO, more head aches with generators than all other causes.

RE: generator question.

Wayne,
For a novice, will you please tell me what I see in looking at the w/f on the eu2000i running the WFCO converter and the w/f on the Microquiet running the same. Is there any important difference?

WHJCO or others,
Is it possible you or perhaps someone else, will show a scope view of the Honda k/o 3500w type and a Inverter like a Honda/Magna/Honeywell S/W. along with common out of the wall we all use. Would be interesting the see the three to compare.

RE: generator question.

Home AC is produced by a generator and is "clean". Just because an inverter makes the AC doesn't make more suitible for electronics. Get the facts. You might want to take a look at the waveforms of an inverter generator compared to a standard one before making this statement: Power Quality form Various Backup Devices.
Not being a 'lectrician some questions remained about the old kits we put together years ago. Neutral and ground being one and the same with the old two prong plugs and grounded to the chassis. Anyway, all good reading, was a good post for me.
